Over the past years, I’ve written in a genre where I don’t share my pen name. You can likely guess what it is. I’m not saying it though. 🙂 That might be it. But maybe it’s something even wilder!
Anyway, my desire to write something that I can actually say, “Hey – I wrote this!” has grown. I’ve been looking for something new that I enjoy reading and can enjoy writing. It needed to be something that is accepting of short stories, novellas, and novels. It need to be a genre that I can grow with. And I think I found it.
But figuring out what new genre I want to write in is just the beginning. I need to do the research. So, I’ve been looking at Amazon to see what sells. I mean, obviously this genre that I have choosen does sell, otherwise i wouldn’t be writing in it. But I need to see what specifically is selling. What kinds of titles sell. What sells best – shorts, novellas, or novels? What kind of characters do the readers of this genre like to read? What do the blurbs of the best sellers look like? What kind of covers are the readers attracted to?
And then there’s the marketing! How are readers finding books? What advertising options are there out there – free or paid? What social media platforms are the readers on? Are there Facebook groups that they go to? How can I find readers to get on my email list?
There are so many things to consider!
And then of course, I need to get used to writing in the new genre. And with that comes reading. I need to get a feel for the tone of the writing that best sellers are using and figure out the tropes and beats.
It’s kind of scary. But it is also very exciting. I have a feeling that I may have to actually buy some covers at first. I’m not sure if I have the skills to make my own. I may even need to get editors. Although, some of the stuff I’ve read in top categories could use some editing so maybe not.
Anyway, I am about to embark on a new genre of writing. Hopefully, by the end of the month, I’ll have my first book published in this new genre and we’ll see how it goes from there.
Are you curious? Then keep watching this blog because this is a genre I can share and I plan to share the heck out of it!
